We’re told at an early age that absolutes are difficult to find in our world. The terms “always” and “never” are frequently used, but don’t often reflect reality. We know that our world is constantly changing, and that our human nature is, well, let’s just say we’re not perfect. “Always” is a relative term and typically refers to issues that arise repeatedly, yet we know there are exceptions. And we’ve also heard the statement, “Never say never,” as we often believe in the heat of the moment that we will “never do that again” only to find ourselves in a similar situation down the road.
We strive for consistency, and sometimes we can get close, but never quite hit the mark. We have the best intentions, but life happens to us and other priorities begin to fill our days and override commitments we have previously made. (Remember those New Year’s resolutions??) Yet, we do our best to live good, productive lives, knowing that we won’t always measure up and that we simply cannot say that we’ll never fall short of our own expectations and others.
Fortunately, in our ever-changing world, we have a Source we can rely on that is absolutely consistent and has been for over thousands of years. Jesus is the perfect definition of always and never. As we ride along life’s journey of uncertainty and inconsistencies, He will always be the Rock we can lean on and will never leave us. He is always there, He is always just a prayer away, always willing to forgive us and will never stop loving us.
Our world can so easily sway us, and as we read in the Book of James, we can be “tossed like the waves on the sea, blown by the wind,” but with Jesus in our lives, we anchor ourselves to Him through our Faith. Our circumstances will change, our environment will change, and we change as we move through our years. But our Lord Jesus is the same today as He was when He walked the earth over two thousand years ago, and He will always be our Foundation of stability.
Dear Lord we pray – As we travel through our unpredictable world, help us to look to you for the steadfastness and constant dependability that you offer to us always. We know that you always love us, are always willing to forgive us, and will never leave us. Your presence in our lives is our only true source of stability in an unstable world. Thank you for being there for us – always.
Enjoy the remainder of our summer days,
